The OASIS Intergenerational Tutoring program at Lindbergh School District is recruiting adults to get involved in the mentoring program.

Tutors mentor one student for one hour a week in one of the district’s five elementary schools.

“It benefits the youngsters and the tutor,” Lindbergh OASIS Coordinator Elitta De-Armond stated in a district news release. “This is the 13th year for the OASIS program at Lindbergh, and with one-on-one mentoring, you can’t lose. It’s a win-win situation. Teachers have commented on how much the children enjoy the tutors and really work with them.”

DeArmond will conduct training sessions for new tutors from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Sept. 20 and Sept. 27 in the Administra-tion Building Boardroom, 4900 S. Lind-bergh Blvd., on the high school campus.

“I’ll go through the entire manual that teaches a tutor how to prepare lessons for his or her particular child,” DeArmond stated. “You don’t need prior teaching experience, just the love of children. Tutors learn how to do writing, reading and science lessons. And as they get to know their child, they find out where the interest is and what areas they should work on.”

Tutors are paired with one student in grades kindergarten through 12.

“It is a wonderful thing to watch the relationships that grow between the student and the tutor,” DeArmond stated. “And classroom teachers really notice the difference. Self-confidence goes up. Verbal, reading and writing skills improve because of the one-on-one assistance. The younger students even learn to tell time because they are watching the clock for their tutor. And woe to the tutor who is late.”
