Lindbergh High School boys’ golf team captures its first district title in 36 years

The Lindbergh High School boys’ golf team captured its first district title in 36 years when the Flyers recently won the Class 4, District 1 championship at the Dal-housie Country Club in Cape Girardeau.

Lindbergh senior Tommie Wuennenberg won the district championship with a round of 75 as senior Jon Griffiths shot a 79 for fourth-place overall.

“Districts were pretty much a storybook story for us,” head coach Mike Tyler said. “I looked it up in (Athletics Director) Mike Slyman’s office and we hadn’t won districts since 1972 when we took second place at state.”

At the Class 4 state championships at Island Green Golf Course in Republic, the Flyers took 11th overall with a two-round total of 332.

“State was a little bit disappointing for the guys,” Tyler said. “Getting down to state though as a team was a pretty big accomplishment for us.”

Lindbergh’s top finisher at state was senior Mike Ferris, who took 23rd overall with a two-round total of 156.

“Mike’s always been a kid that can really break through for you,” Tyler said. “All areas of his game are solid.”

Wuennenberg, who won the Suburban West Conference and the District 1 championship, placed 74th overall with a score 166.

“I really hate to see him leave,” Tyler said. “He’s a great guy who’s always working on his game and it really paid off for him this season. He was the kind of senior who really helped with the younger players, which sometimes you don’t see because seniors tend to be focused on themselves.”

Griffiths placed 83rd overall with a score of 168.

“Jon’s a real solid, all-around player that had some family obligations at home and didn’t have a chance to play the practice round,” Tyler said. “He shot an 85 on the first day and came back with an 83 on the second day.”

Lindbergh senior Tim Risk placed 114th overall with a 179 as he shot a 96 in the first round and an 83 in the second round.

“I always call Tim the barometer of our team,” Tyler said. “When he plays well, the team plays well and I think that 96 in the first round loosened him up for the second round.”

Taking 123rd overall was freshman Kyle Young with a score of 186.

“Kyle was our only freshman on the team and played solid all season long,” Tyler said. “I think that going to state was a great experience for him.”
