Lindbergh High girls ride unbeaten streak

The Lindbergh High School girls’ soccer team has been unbeatable for the past three weeks.

The Flyers (11-3-6, 4-1-3 Suburban West) have been riding an 11-game unbeaten streak that extends all the way back to an April 17 1-1 tie against Parkway South.

But Lindbergh High’s current undefeated stretch has given the Flyers their fair share of frustration.

Lindbergh racked up a 0-0 tie against Hazelwood Central on May 1, a 1-1 tie against Lafayette on May 2 and a 0-0 tie at Webster Groves on May 4. Yet head coach Mark Giesing was glad to see his Flyers defeat Kirkwood 3-0 on Saturday.

“We looked better today than we had earlier in the week,” Giesing told the Call. “The girls really came through in the second half.”

Lindbergh sophomore Aimee Ubriaco got the Flyers on the scoreboard in the second half on a crossover from freshman midfielder Jen Kienstra.

“Aimee got the crossover from Kienstra and brought the ball down nicely,” Giesing said. “She then fired a nice volley just over the goalie’s head.”

Later in the second half, Ubriaco was taken down in the Kirkwood backfield, which resulted in a penalty kick goal by junior forward Aly Reynolds.

“Ubriaco had been taken down in the Kirkwood box and a penalty kick was awarded,” Giesing said. “Aly Reynolds nicely converted it for us.”

Ubriaco struck again for the Flyers when she recorded her 13th goal of the season with sophomore forward Casey Caldwell notching the assist.

Lindbergh goalkeeper Hayley Fox re-corded her 12th shutout of the season as she lowered her goals-against average to 0.43. The senior goalie is 11-3-6 overall this season.

Lindbergh wraps up the regular season at 5:30 p.m. today — May 11 — when they play host to Parkway North for Senior Night. The Vikings are 5-11-2 overall and are riding a three-game losing streak that includes a May 4 5-3 loss at home to Pattonville. The Flyers notched a 1-0 win at Parkway North last season with a second-half goal by Ubriaco.

“This is an important game in that we want to send our seniors off on a good note,” Giesing said. “I think we’ll need to set the tone right away and keep our momentum going for districts.”
