The Lindbergh High School girls’ soccer team struggled to an overall mark of 8-10-2 with a record of 3-3-1 in the Suburban West Conference last season.

The 2003 Flyers are looking to improve on last year’s performance as they begin play next Monday. “I think there’s many more questions than answers right now,” Lindbergh Head Coach Mark Giesing said. “We’re going to be a very young team.”

The Flyers have three returning seniors this season in forward Julie Rosenhauer, goalkeeper Claire Ward and defender Emily Boehmer. Rosenhauer returns as Lind-bergh’s top scoring threat after recording nine goals and three assists for 21 points. Four of her goals were game-winning goals.

“Julie will have to be the key go-to girl for us up top,” Giesing said. “She’s capable of producing double-digit goals this season. Julie’s been very steady for us in her three years on the varsity team.”

Ward posted a record of 9-8-1 last season for Lindbergh, while recording five shut-outs. She made 162 saves last season while carrying a 1.41 goals-against average.

Giesing believes that the senior will be one of the main cogs in the Flyers’ defense this season. “Claire’s critical for us in the backfield,” Giesing said. “She’ll have to come up big for us in goal.”

Boehmer also will serve as a key component to the Lindbergh defense this season.

She recorded one goal and one assist for three points last season.

“I think Emily is going to do a good job for us this year,” Giesing said. “She’s a real team player and we like her team spirit and enthusiasm. She’s been typically a midfielder in the years past, but I think she’s going to turn into a good defender.”

Juniors Angie and Allie Libby will see time at the defender and midfielder positions this season. The twin sisters both re-corded two assists each last season.

“Angie looks like she’ll be taking on the role of a stopper this year,” Giesing said. “Allie actually moves from the stopper po-sition to the center midfielder position.”

Junior Bethany Jockish will join Angie Libby and Boehmer in the backfield this season. Giesing believes Jockish will provide some stability to the team’s defense.

“Bethany provides a relaxed and calm nature on the field,” Giesing said. “She’s a player who doesn’t crack under pressure and has been very impressive in the off season.”
