Heat advisory issued through Friday, Thursday expected to be hottest day of the period

The National Weather Service in St. Louis has issued a heat advisory through Friday evening

Dangerous heat is expected this afternoon in central Missouri and then across a broader area Thursday, June 29 through 7 p.m. Friday, June 30 including the St. Louis region A heat advisory has been issued for area along and south of Interstate 70 for both days.

Afternoon temperatures are expected to top out in the upper 90s to near 100 degrees across much of the area. Humidity will make it feel hotter, with heat index values of 100 to 110 degrees expected. Thursday is expected to be the hottest day of the period.

The St. Louis County Office of Emergency Management encourages people to drink plenty of fluids and to stay in an air-conditioned room out of the sun if possible. Young children and pets should never be left unattended in vehicles under any circumstances.

Anyone who works outside should take extra precautions, and reschedule strenuous activities to the early morning or evening if possible. Wear lightweight and loose-fitting clothing. The Occupational Safety and Health Administration recommends frequent breaks in shaded or air conditioned environment.

Heat stroke is an emergency and 911 should be called in the event of suspected heat stroke.
