Although the Lindbergh High School football team grabbed its fifth straight win with a 35-0 victory over Northwest, the Flyers’ defense stole the show.

“We had a really good defensive effort,” Lindbergh head coach Tom Beauchamp told the Call. “Northwest played hard, but gave us a couple of fumbles down the field, which obviously benefited us.”

The Lindbergh defense has held its opponents to just 9.2 points a game this season.

On Friday, Lindbergh’s offense got things rolling midway through the first quarter as senior quarterback Joe Haas scored on a one-yard run with 7:06 left in the quarter.

Junior place kicker Jason LaRussa re-corded his first of five extra points after the Haas touchdown run.

Haas finished the evening with 13 carries for 99 yards and went 9-20, passing for 101 yards.

“Joe’s been playing real consistent for us,” Beauchamp said. “He’s really getting an understanding of what he’s capable of doing.”

The Flyers extended their lead to 14-0 after Jeff Gabris bruised his way for a 10-yard touchdown run with 11:22 left in the first half. The senior running back scored again on a seven-yard run with 0:34 left in the third quarter. He finished the evening with five carries for 45 yards and two touchdowns.

“Jeff’s coming into his own as a running back,” Beauchamp said. “He’s got a lot of heart and determination out there.”

Lindbergh’s Drew Yanker brought the score to 28-0 on a five-yard run with 10:11 left in the fourth quarter. The senior running back carried the ball eight times for 33 yards against the Lions.

“Drew was hungry that night,” Beau-champ said. “He ran like a possessed man because when he puts his shoulder down, he’s someone you just can’t stop.”

The final blow of the game came with 6:45 remaining when junior running back Tori King reached the end zone on a two-yard touchdown run. King carried the ball four times for 18 yards against the Lions.

“He’s really starting to run more in a commanding way,” the Lindbergh coach said. “As time goes on, he’s going to be an asset down the road.”

Defensively speaking, Gabris and senior defensive end Jason Muehlheausler had solid games, according to Beauchamp.

Gabris recorded 10 tackles and six assists, while Muehlheausler had eight tackles, two assists, two sacks and one fumble recovery.

“Jason had a pretty stellar week,” Beau-champ said. “He’s big, physical, quick and is the type of player you wish you had every year at defensive end.”

Up next for the Flyers is a Suburban West Conference meeting with Lafayette on Friday. The Lancers are coming off a 38-7 win over Mehlville, which has the Flyers head coach concerned.

“They (Lafayette) are a very talented ball club,” Beauchamp said. “Their defense looks strong and I think it’s going to be a challenge. We’re going to have our hands full.”

Lindbergh’s game at Lafayette is scheduled for a 7:30 p.m. start.
