The Lindbergh High School football team’s 2011 season came to a screeching halt Friday night when the they couldn’t get past SLUH.

The Flyers, led by head coach Tom Beauchamp, put up a good fight but eventually fell 35-21 as they were unable to slow down the Junior Billikens who now have won six in a row.

“I think we played well coming in and I think at the very end we needed to get things done and the ball didn’t bounce our way. I don’t know about winning by 11, but winning would have been nice,” Beauchamp said, noting the Flyers would have needed to win by 11 to beat De Smet in the tiebreaker to advance in the playoffs.

“We were in a situation where we had to win by 11, so we started pressing the envelope a little bit. We went out of our comfort zone to get things done and when you do that against good teams, sometimes it can haunt you,” he said.

SLUH started the scoring just two plays into the game with a 78-yard pass from play from quarterback Trevor McDonagh at 11:01. But that was the only the scoring in the first.

Lindbergh’s Grant Krueger opened things up in the second quarter, putting the Flyers on the board with a goal-line run at 9:04.

SLUH answered that one as McDonagh carried one in at 5:48, but Lindbergh struck again when Jordan Goodman brought home a 22-yard pass from quarterback Peter Simpson with 2:10 left in the half.

Both teams went to the locker room tied at 14, SLUH with their district title on the line and the Flyers with their playoff hopes on the line.

They returned from the locker room ready to carry out the battle. SLUH struck first late in the quarter with a touchdown by Stefan Sansone on a 13-yard pass from McDonagh at 4:31.

Then just 20 seconds later, Lindbergh’s Blake Beauchamp brought one down on an 86-yard pass play from Simpson at 4:11.

But in the fourth quarter, the Flyers couldn’t contain the Junior Billikens as McDonagh carried in two more touchdowns that went unanswered, ending the Flyers’ 2011 season.

Simpson threw 12 completions in 26 attempts for 252 yards and two interceptions in the contest. Overall in his senior season, Simpson threw 104 completions in 225 attempts for a total of 1517 yards. He had 18 touchdowns and eight interecptions for the season.

Beauchamp said he was proud of his seniors and they were a particularly special group to him.

“I think they’re a great group of seniors. I’ve known most of them since they were in kindergarten, my son being one of the seniors,” Beauchamp said. “You get to know the kids a little better, the families a little better and they’ve been fantastic to coach and they’ve been wonderful young men. They’ve been outstanding citizens, academians and they’ve been very impressive.”
