Lindbergh High School varsity football fans got to enjoy a much-needed win Friday night when the Flyers picked up their third victory of the season, crunching the Marquette Mustangs 42-7.

Head coach Tom Beauchamp told the Call the win for his 3-5 Flyers was crucial and cited some of the keys to the victory.

“We really did need the win. It’s one of those things you get to a certain point in the season and you’ve got to have a win and I think we needed that,” he said. “I think we played with intensity and we played without too many mental errors, which we knew we could do a good job if we did that. So I think the kids hit their stride and played well overall.”

With an explosive offensive effort in the contest, the only lapse on the other side of the ball was when the Flyers botched a kick and gave Marquette excellent field position, which resulted in the Mustangs’ only touchdown of the night.

One of the aiding factors in the contest and every contest is the tandem of seniors Chuck Houska and Garrett Krueger, who have played together for three years.

Krueger had six receptions for 161 yards receiving and two touchdowns on the night, while Houska completed 13 of 21 passes for 309 yards of offense and five touchdowns. While the two were a factor, they were not the only ones.

Also scoring for the Flyers were Ben Kraft, Logan Offner, Carl Lovely and Jay DuPree.

Beauchamp said Friday’s win was an all-around team effort.

“I think Houska and Krueger both played very well tonight,” he said. “But I think there’s a bunch of other guys out there. (Houska’s) got just as much of a relationship, as far as timing, with all the other receivers. We had a bunch of guys catch the ball tonight.

“Houska knows that Garrett’s special and Garrett just make things happen, so he just gets the ball to him, but then again, we had several guys catch the ball tonight.”

The Flyers have their work cut out for them if they want another victory this Friday. They travel to their rival Mehlville to take on the 3-5 Panthers.

Both teams are under .500 and look to take advantage of the final tuneup before they playoffs begin next week.

“Next week is going to be a tough one,” Beauchamp said the game against Mehlville, noting that Mehlville head coach Kent Heinemann is a former Lindbergh assistant coach. “I worked at Mehlville for 11 years, so there’s a lot of crossover there as well as with the other coaches, so it will be an intense battle and I think they’re talented.

“We are going to have to go in there and play our best game. We have to play at their place and they seem to play pretty good at their place most of the time.”
