High heat indexes return to the St. Louis region, with a heat advisory issued from noon to 6 p.m. Tuesday.
Heat index values of 107 are expected in portions of central, east central and southeast Missouri, and south central and southwest Illinois. Counties under the advisory in Missouri are St. Louis City, St. Louis, St. Charles, Moniteau, Cole, Osage, Callaway, Montgomery, Lincoln, Gasconade, Warren, Franklin, Jefferson and Ste. Genevieve.
The combination of high temperatures and high humidity can cause heat-related illnesses. Drink plenty of fluids, stay in an air-conditioned room if possible, stay out of the sun and check on relatives and neighbors. Under no circumstances should young children or pets be left unattended in vehicles.
Those who work outside should take extra precautions, and if possible, strenuous activities should be scheduled for early mornings or evenings. Wear lightweight and loose-fitting clothing. To reduce risk during outdoor work, the Occupational Safety and Health Administration recommends scheduling frequent rest breaks in shaded or air-conditioned environments.
Anyone overcome by heat should be moved to a cool and shaded location.
