Crestwood team beginning to come around

By STEPHEN GLOVER

For the Call

Oh how quickly Lady Luck can turn on you.

Just ask the Crestwood American Legion baseball team, which suffered an 8-4 loss to Oakville on Saturday and then posted a 6-4 win over Rock Memorial on Sunday.

Crestwood (7-9, 6-8 District 10) had beaten Oakville 9-4 a week ago before suffering its fourth loss in a row this week in an 8-4 setback.

“We would have liked to beat them (Oak-ville) because they’re a good ball club,” Crestwood Head Coach Roy Tippett told the Call. “Oakville did a great job in hitting the ball and we were less than par on the mound.”

Starting pitcher Dave Ounanion threw a solid game for Crestwood, which Tippett viewed as promising sign for the young hurler. “He actually threw very well,” Tip-pett said. “Dave had thrown great until the fifth inning. He really didn’t have a whole lot of innings in the spring but has really done a great job for us and I think will only get better as the season goes on.”

Rock Memorial had pounded Crestwood 20-7 in the first game of the season and it was a sweet revenge victory for Post 777 as it recorded the 6-4 win Sunday evening.

“They’re a very good hitting team and it was nice to see Mark Spinner do so well against them,” Tippett said. “It was a good win and we needed to get some momentum back.”

Spinner started on the mound for Crest-wood, giving up just three runs in five innings. Spinner’s performance was similar to his strong play throughout the season, Tippett said.

“Mark threw great today,” Tippett said. “He’s been good most of the year. In fact, tonight he had all three of his pitches working for him.”

Crestwood will compete tonight — July 3 — in the Ballwin Tournament at Ellis-ville and Marquette Senior High School.

Tippett believes that the competition will be a good opportunity for Post 777 to start some form of a winning streak.

“It will be a very good tournament,” Tippett said. “It’s going to be a good test for us because we’ll be playing a lot of games in a row, which will help the pitchers get into a rhythm. I think that we’re be-ginning to come around because our fundamentals are getting better as a team.”
