Carnahan visits with West Point student of Oakville

U.S. Rep. Russ Carnahan recently met with Tim Thomas, a West Point student he nominated for the academy last summer.

Thomas has completed his freshman — or plebe — year at the U.S. Military Academy at West Point and is doing well, according to a news release.

After the academic year ended, Thomas returned for six weeks of military training, part of which he served at Camp Buckner, and one week at “tank school” in Fort Knox, Ky. He has expressed an interest in becoming a tank commander and is considering a major in history, military science or psychology, the release stated.

Thomas was joined by his parents, Jim and Paula Thomas of Oakville. Also at-tending were Bill Cocos of the William G. Cocos Plumbing Co. Inc. and attorney Frank Janowski. Both were helpful in submitting Thomas’ application for nomination to West Point, according to the release.

Thomas has participated in football and Calvary Scouts. He also has received a commendation from Col. Michael Jones, West Point director of admissions, for his work in escorting potential West Point recruits on visits to the campus.
