Peace Day at Mehlville’s Bierbaum Elementary is an event meant to celebrate the diversity of the school through games, crafts and food. The school hosted its fifth iteration of the event April 8 in its gymnasium. Bierbaum is home to 535 students, and more than 50 percent speak a language other than or in addition to English. “It’s our signature event of the year, the celebration of all the different places we come from,” Principal Paul Morris said. “We have over 30 different countries represented by the students here at Bierbaum.” Peace Day is hosted by the International Club, which is reserved for fifth grade students. The club was founded five years ago by Bilingual Specialist Dragica Dizdarevic, who said she wanted to capitalize on the growing school population and the cultural diversity within.
