Audit report for the 2002-2003 school year accepted by Mehlville Board of Education

The Mehlville Board of Education recently voted unanimously to accept an independent auditor’s report of the district’s fiscal operations for the 2002-2003 school year, according to a school district news release.

The audit was performed by Mueller, Walla & Albertson at a cost of $12,500 to the district. Board members voted to accept the audit Dec. 15.

Representing the auditing firm, Rick Albertson and Holly Koozma told the Board of Education of their findings in a report presented at the Nov. 17 meeting.

In his presentation, Albertson cited “no reportable conditions,” “no instances of noncompliance,” “no audit findings,” and “an unqualified opinion” related to the audit.

Furthermore, the 64-page audit document declared “the Mehlville R-9 School District was determined to be a low-risk auditee.”

In addition, Albertson cited strengths of the district’s accounting system; in particular, the high degree of internal control.

In the district release, Randy Charles, assistant superintendent for finance and the district’s chief financial officer, credited Mehlville’s system of checks and balances as a main reason for the successful audit.

“Every financial transaction of the school district is viewed by several sets of eyes. The staff in the business office is very experienced and pay great attention to detail,” Charles stated in the release.

“These staff members should receive a great deal of the credit for this stamp of approval from the auditors,” the assistant superintendent added.

This year’s audit included a look at all of the Mehlville School District’s financial areas, including Proposition P funds, bonded indebtedness, federal programs, employee salaries and benefits, and the voluntary transfer student program.

Also, for the first time, as required by the Governmental Accounting Standards Board, the audit included a management’s discussion and analysis report summarizing highlights of the audit and key issues facing the school district.

Any member of the community may view the audit by contacting the Mehlville School District business office at 467-5200.

Also, the audit will be available on the district’s web page following winter break, according to the release.
