Work-zone speed limits OK’d

New county ordinances will allow highway and Lambert-St. Louis International Airport officials to set up special speed limits in work zones.

The measures, signed into law last week by County Executive Charlie Dooley, will give the director of highways and traffic and the Lambert airport director the authority to establish construction zone speed limits on county roads and Airport Authority-owned roads, respectively.

The ordinances also prohibit passing in established work zones.

As previously reported, hazardous traffic conditions for workers on a recent airport road project prompted county police to request special speed-limit legislation.

No county ordinances existed at the time to establish and enforce work zone speed limits on county roads. The equivalent Missouri statute applies only to state highways.
