VIDEO: Airman surprises sister at Mehlville High concert

Eighteen-year-old Amanda Turner knew that Friday night’s band performance would be one of her last as a graduating senior at Mehlville High School, but she had no idea how memorable the evening would be.

Amanda’s brother, Tech. Sgt Jeffrey Turner, has been stationed overseas with the U.S. Air Force and hadn’t seen his sister in five years, according to a district news release.

He spent part of his time serving in Iraq, and he currently is stationed at Ramstein Air Base in Germany. Jeffrey flew home May 7 so he could attend the May 9 concert and surprise his sister.

Mehlville Band Director Tony Brown and Jeffrey’s parents coordinated the events leading up to the reunion, including the creation of a video that made it appear Jeffrey was still in Germany, the release stated. After the video played during a break in the performance, Jeffrey walked onto the darkened stage and approached his sister. Amanda nearly leaped from her chair and, while still clutching her flute, she wrapped her arms around her brother and wept with joy, according to the release.

After a short stay in St. Louis, Jeffrey will return to Germany and eventually be reassigned to an Air Force facility in Georgia.
