Green Park got a familiar face as a “new” aldermen this week after Ward 1 Alderman Esad Softic resigned last month.

Former Ward 1 Alderman Michael Broughton was appointed by Mayor Tim Thuston to replace Softic, who resigned as alderman after moving out of Green Park.

Broughton will finish out the rest of Softic’s term through next April, when he is up for re-election.

Broughton joins a long list of aldermen who have been appointed by Thuston to fill vacancies left on the board due to resignations or lack of candidates during elections.

In fact, Softic himself was appointed to the board by Thuston last August to fill a vacancy after the only candidate who filed for Ward 1 in the 2020 municipal elections was disqualified, leaving an empty ballot.

Broughton challenged and lost to Thuston for mayor in April. Carol Hamilton, also a former alderman, ran unopposed for Broughton’s seat in that election.
