Standout performances lead Oakville to 13th place in Lee’s Summit tourney

The Oakville Senior High School Tigers had a handful of very good performances at the recent Lee’s Summit Christmas Invitational Wrestling Tournament and finished right in the middle of the pack — 13th of 24 teams.

The Tigers, who finished with 157.5 team points, had a respectable finish despite having only nine of the 14 weight classes filled and had four wrestlers finish in the top six.

At the 140-pound weight class, Matt Mitchell won four matches and managed a sixth-place finish, while teammates Eric Schmidt (160) and Ryan Sutton (189) both had five wins and took fourth place.

Nick Wymore, who wrestles in the 275-pound class, also won five matches and placed higher than any other Tiger with his third-place finish.

Sutton was unable to compete after suffering a concussion in his quarterfinal match, but after spending the night in the hospital Oakville Coach Tim Vogel said he believed he would be fine.

“We wrestled pretty well, especially if you consider we only had nine guys up there,” Vogel told the Call.

“We had a junior-varsity tournament that a couple of guys stayed back for, and Kyle Foley had the flu and could not go. We thought he might have scored a lot of points for us,” Vogel added.

The winning team last weekend was Park Hill, which garnered 344.5 team points.

The highest finish among St. Louis area teams was compiled by Fox High School, which had 287.5 team points.

Vogel did not have any complaints with how the Tigers competed, especially considering the talent they faced.

“That was a tough tournament and we’re not disappointed at all,” he said. “That is the best tournament in the state with a lot of nationally ranked kids.”

Oakville does not have any events scheduled for this week, but will compete at the Granite City Tournament next week. Vogel hopes that his team will be well-prepared after such tough competition thus far on the season.

“I think we will be pretty ready for it after some tough grinds,” he said. “We should have 12 or 13 of the 14 weights filled, and we should be more seasoned.”

The Granite City Tournament runs all day Monday, Dec. 29 and again Tuesday, Dec. 30.
