SLUH defeats Oakville Tigers 48-31

Tigers to face Marquette Friday

The Oakville High School varsity football team was just one half away from extending its winning streak to four games, but fell 48-31 to St. Louis University High and missed an opportunity for a little revenge by beating the team that sent them home from the playoffs last season.

With the playoffs beginning next week, Oakville head coach Arlee Conners told the Call it good to know where they stand against one of the top teams out there.

“They have a great player,” Conners said of Raymond Wingo, the Jr. Billikens running back who scored all six of the team’s touchdowns. “It’s good to see how your guys matchup against a player like that, but, unfortunately, tonight I don’t think we matched up very well.”

Despite the loss, the Tigers played a solid game and kept their offense on the roll they have been on the past four weeks.

That offense is lead by running back Moe LaGrand, who had three touchdowns on the night.

Quarterback Andy Oliver started the scoring for Oakville late in the first quarter with a 7-yard run. Then Wingo answered with his first of three in the second quarter on a 22-yard interception return to start the quarter.

It was all LaGrand for Oakville in the second quarter, as he also plotted three, sending his club to halftime up 21-18.

But the Tigers could not hang on, and were outscored 27-6 in the second half. Arsante Conners scored the only touchdown of the second half for Oakville on an 18-yard pass from Oliver.

“We just wanted to come out and play well and execute plays,” Conners said. “We just gave them too many opportunities.”

All things considered the Tigers are happy to be where they are at. They had a tough start to the season going just 1-4 in their first five games.

“They’ve had their ups and downs this season,” Conners said. “We just want to play next week and see what we can do in the playoffs and hopefully move on.”

Oakville will try to use their late season momentum to move on as they play at Marquette Friday night.
