Reader wants ‘sanctity, dignity and value’ of every child: No abortion

Letters+to+the+editor

Letter to the Editor

To the editor:

I’m unsure who’s all included among the “wrinkled old dudes and old-thinking women” Georgeanne Gass refers to in her letter (rambling diatribe?) of Aug. 1; its inflammatory rhetoric makes it difficult to follow. But I do recognize belonging to at least a portion of those she describes.

I am a 55-year-old Catholic Christian woman who opposes legalized abortion because I believe that ending an innocent human life is always wrong, regardless of the circumstances surrounding conception.

However, I also believe strongly in assisting pregnant women victimized by rape, exploited by domestic abuse, or abandoned by their families and/or an unborn child’s father. Unlike Ms. Gass, I see a plethora of St. Louis agencies deeply concerned for the welfare of moms-to-be facing a crisis pregnancy or needing help with a newborn. Most are faith-based organizations. Many can offer months-long assistance — some even with housing —  and include: Nurses for Newborns, the St. Vincent de Paul Society, Catholic Charities, Birthright, Lutheran Family and Children’s Services, ThriVe, Good Shepherd, Helping Hand Me Downs, Our Lady’s Inn and Crisis Nursery.

I’m grateful for these agencies — and for Christian teachings that reveal the truth of the sanctity, dignity and value of every human person.
