All it took was one hit by Parkway South’s Amanda Geile in the Missouri Class 4 state softball quarterfinal Saturday morning to crush Oakville’s chances of reaching the state championship game.

Geile hit a two-out grand slam in the top of the eighth inning to give Parkway South an 8-4 win over the Tigers. The loss for the Tigers (19-8, 6-1 Suburban West) was the second of the season to Parkway South (24-4, 8-0 Suburban West), which shut out Oak-ville 4-0 on Sept. 24.

“Parkway South is just a really good team,” Oakville head coach Rich Sturm told the Call. “It was their time and their turn. For us, it just wasn’t meant to be.”

Oakville jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning on a run scored by Marissa Simon. Third baseman Julie Kern-en hammered her second home run of the season in the bottom of the third inning to give Oakville a 2-1 lead. Parkway South took a 4-2 lead in the fourth inning, but the Tigers tied the game 4-4 with a run in the fifth and one run in the sixth inning.

Oakville starting pitcher Remy Edwards took the loss, finishing the season with a 16-7 record and a 1.69 ERA.

“Remy battled for us all season long,” Sturm said. “We didn’t get to where we are without her. She took us right to the front door of the final four.”

Though Oakville’s loss to Parkway South was disappointing, Oakville graduates no seniors from this year’s team.

“We want to take some time now to reflect about this season,” Sturm said. “I really think that this team made progress as the season went on. What we’ll do now is talk to each player on the team and see what we can improve on over the summer and get ready for next season.”
