Oakville Legion finishes frustrating 2009 season

Frustrating probably best describes the just-ended 2009 season for the Oakville American Legion baseball team.

Oakville (10-27, 1-7 District 10) finished the season with a 12-2 loss to Thoman Boothe in the District 10 Tournament. A nine-run outburst by Post 338 busted the game wide open for Thoman Boothe and sealed Oakville’s fate.

“It was a good game, except the fourth inning,” Oakville head coach Matt Boyer said. “We had a couple of walks and some dink hits in that the next thing you know, they have 11 runs on the board.”

Oakville starting pitcher Kolby King took the loss against Thoman Boothe, giving up five runs on five hits in 3 2⁄3 innings.

King also walked four batters and struck out three as he finished the season with a 1-7 record and a 6.57 ERA.

“In the first couple of innings, Kolby did fine,” Boyer said. “He got himself out of a jam in the third inning and in the fourth, he probably didn’t have his best stuff, but we ended up pulling him in order to stop the momentum that Thoman Boothe was building.”

Oakville infielder Joe Layton had a solid afternoon at the plate as he racked up two hits and one RBI to bring his batting average to .276 with 8 RBIs.

“Joe hit the ball hard a couple of times against Thoman Boothe,” Boyer said. “The problem we had is that we just couldn’t get three to four hits together as a team in order to start a rally.”

Sophomore Neil Wallis also put together a two-hit performance that included a run scored.

“Neil had a good year at JV and I asked him to play with varsity, so this was the first time that we started three sophomores in the outfield,” Boyer said. “He went out there and put the bat on the ball.”

The District 10 All-Star game will be played at 7 p.m. Sunday at the Ballwin Athletic Association with players to be named after press time.
