Though only a sophomore at Oakville High School, Samuel Engel has already made a name for himself in the local music scene.
Starting his musical journey on drums during the COVID-19 pandemic, Engel has since moved to the bass guitar, performing with two local bands: Aragon, a teen cover band started by Engel that plays a mix of 60s, 70s, 80s and 90s rock – “the era when rock ‘n’ roll was at its best” – and Torchlight Parade, an original band started by his dad, Doug Engel, and uncle, Matt Engel, focused on hard rock and theatricality.
“I love playing bass because it allows me to perform, move, dance and act instead of just being behind the drums. It gives me the chance to be more involved with the audience,” Engel said. “I tend to keep to myself and am pretty quiet and shy, but when I’m on stage, it’s a whole different story.”
Aragon – comprised of Engel, Gavin Martin and Aislynn Spraul, who competed with Engel as a trio in the 2025 St. Louis Teen Talent Competition, as well as Zion Voegtlin and Grayson James – was formed in September 2023.
“I met Zion through our moms, who connected at the library. Zion came to one of my shows, and we hit it off. Gavin, who was the drummer for that show, also joined the band. A bit later, Grayson came on board as our lead singer, (and) eventually, Aislynn joined us after rocking a fundraiser show,” Engel said. “We cover hits from some of the greatest bands of all time, and it’s a lot of fun to bring those songs to life.”
Though the focus of Aragon since its formation has been covers of existing songs, the teens plan on recording their first original album in June. Luckily, Engel and Martin, Aragon’s drummer and Engel’s best friend, are no strangers to creating original music as they are both members of local hard rock band, Torchlight Parade, as well.
Torchlight Parade – formed years before the two were born by Engel’s dad and uncle – is inspired by the brothers’ work in the funeral industry, with the band’s themes centering around life and death.
“It’s an honor to share the stage with my dad, uncle and best friend. It feels really special. We all bring something unique to the table, and having family in the band makes it even more meaningful,” Engel said. “We have a unique sound blending hard rock with theatrical performances. Our music often revolves around life and death themes, with a dark but energetic vibe.”
Being in both bands has not only been fun for Engel, but also influential in his musicality.
“It’s been huge for my growth as a musician,” he said. “Playing in both bands has taught me how to perform, how to interact with audiences, and how to really own the stage. The different styles and energies between the two bands keep me on my toes and push me to be better.”
Music by both Aragon and Torchlight Parade can be streamed on every major platform, including Spotify, Apple Music and Amazon Music. CDs and records can be found at local record stores or purchased online. Both bands can also be connected with via social media.
“I just want to say a huge thank you to everyone who supports us — whether it’s through coming to shows, streaming our music or just encouraging us along the way,” Engel said. “We’re so grateful for the fans and for the opportunities we’ve had. Both Aragon and Torchlight Parade are really special to me, and I can’t wait to see where we go next.”
Catch Aragon live at this year’s “Celebrate St. Louis” event on July 4, featuring national headliners, additional local talent, family-friendly attractions and a firereworks show on the St. Louis riverfront.
