Oakville High School choirs earn top honors

Music educators from around the state will enjoy a 30-minute performance from the Oakville High Concert Choir at the annual Missouri Music Educators’ Association annual convention at Tan-Tar-A resort this January.

The 65-member Oakville Concert Choir, under the direction of Paula Martin, was invited to perform at the event after earning the title “Missouri Honor Choir” from the Missouri Music Educators’ Association.

Oakville High School’s choir program is among the best in the state. The audition choirs include 140 students performing in five different groups — Concert Choir Mixed, Concert Choir Treble, Showcase Choir, Madrigal Singers and Women’s Chamber Choir. The assistant choir director is Kimberly Jeffs.

In May, the Oakville choirs competed at the National Heritage Music Festival event in Anaheim, Calif. Oakville captured five first-place finishes out of the six divisions. The Oakville singers also earned a pair of Adjudicators’ Award of Excellence (Concert Choir Mixed and Chamber Choir), Outstanding Choral Group honors (Concert Choir) and the Choral Sweepstakes for best overall school performance.

The choirs are preparing for their first performance, a Fall Concert scheduled for Nov. 3 at Canaan Baptist Church. Among their many performances this school year will be competing in the National Heritage Music Festival at Orlando, Fla., in May.
