Oakville girls end 2005 on a high note as Lutheran South tourney champions

The Oakville Senior High girls’ basketball team finished 2005 on a victorious note last week, defeating Webster Groves 65-58 to win the Lutheran South Christ-mas Tournament.

“Overall in the tournament, I thought we played really well,” Oakville head coach Ron Thompson told the Call. “I thought that we played really well in the second quarter (against Webster Groves).”

The Tigers (8-3, 1-1 Suburban West) over-came a 15-9 deficit in the first quarter to take a commanding 39-20 lead by halftime.

“They (Webster Groves) played a physical and full-court style of game,” Thomp-son said. “In the first quarter, we were ad-justing to that style of game.”

Oakville’s Faith Zabek led the Tigers with 21 points and 17 rebounds.

The senior forward also racked up one steal and one assist in the win over Webster Groves.

“Between Faith and (senior forward) Sherry (Zehner), they make it hard for any team to defend us,” Thompson said. “I was really happy with her rebounding because it really bolstered us.”

Megan Reel of the Tigers also scored in double figures with a 14-point effort that included seven steals and six assists.

The senior guard also recorded two re-bounds, while nailing three of five shots from three-point range.

“Megan really plays a huge part in our success,” Thompson said. “She’s the one that turns us up a notch both offensively and defensively.”

The Tigers are back in action today — Jan. 5 — when they travel to Parkway South (3-7, 0-1) for a Suburban West Conference showdown with the Patriots.

“I got to watch them against Mehlville on Wednesday,” Thompson said of Parkway South. “They’re a team that we’ll need to get points from both Sherry (Zehner) and Faith (Zabek) in order to win.”

Oakville’s road game begins at 7 p.m.
