New SVDP thrift store opens in south county

The St. Vincent de Paul Thrift Store recently opened at 3924 Lemay Ferry Road, near South County Center.

The agency’s fifth such store features a 14,000-square-foot location that presents an impressive array of new and gently used clothing, accessories, household goods, furniture and mattresses for budget-conscious shoppers looking for the best in value, service and quality, according to a news release.

“Walk in here, and you might not know you’re in a thrift shop,” St. Vincent de Paul, or SVDP, Director of Stores Jerry Orzano stated in the release, referring to the store’s updated appearance. “Our modern look and merchandise mix will enable us to take our place among ‘regular’ retailers who target the value-conscious shopper.”

Many St. Vincent de Paul Store shoppers are living on fixed incomes and cannot afford full-priced stores. In 2012, SVDP’s four existing Thrift Store locations in Dellwood, Ballwin, St. Charles and South City served more than 250,000 customers and generated more than a 29-percent increase in revenue compared to the previous year. Stores’ proceeds that exceed their operational costs are reinvested directly back into the charitable programs of SVDP, the release stated

Additionally, SVDP stores are recycling many unsaleable items received in donations. These items may include torn or stained clothes and shoes, non-working electronics, metal and books. The current four stores recycled almost a million pounds of goods in 2012, which added more than $150,000 in revenues to the society.

The new Lemay Ferry Road location is open from 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. Monday through Saturday. Merchandise donations can be made at the store. For large-item pickup by a SVDP truck, call (314) 881-6006.
