More than 40 apply for retirement incentive

More than 40 Mehlville School District employees signed up for an early retirement incentive approved by the Board of Education as a way to reduce personnel costs without layoffs.

A total of 43 district employees applied for the early retirement incentive, including 30 certified teachers and 13 classified staff members, according to Superintendent Terry Noble.

Some 171 employees qualified for the incentive, which the board agreed in December to offer in an effort to find cost savings to offset a projected fiscal 2012 budget deficit.

Employees were given a one-month window to apply for the incentive. Those who qualify will receive 25 percent of their base salary paid in equal installments over three years.

Retirees will be required to provide five days of “service,” such as substitute teaching, each year for the three years they are paid the incentive.
