After struggling last season, the Mehlville Senior High School volleyball team hopes its five returning seniors will return the squad to the top of the conference standings this year.

The Panthers’ overall record last season was 10-15-1 with a 1-7 mark in Suburban West Conference play.

“We have a lot of work to do,” Mehlville head coach Susan Hurt said. “We need to get a lot of team bonding because I just don’t know how the juniors will gel with the five seniors returning.”

Senior setter Shannon Liebler returns after leading Mehlville with 30 aces, 504 assists, 415 digs and 14 blocks last year.

“I expect a lot out of Shannon this year,” Hurt said. “A setter is like a quarterback, and Shannon’s got great insight. She’s been a leader on this team since she was a freshman.”

Outside hitter Jenn Signorino is another senior the Panthers head coach is expecting to make quite an impact this season.

“I think that I’m going to move Jenn to the outside this year,” Hurt said. “She’s a smart player that reads the court well and I’m expecting big things from her this year.”

Senior libero Emily Kiehne led the Panthers with 496 digs last season while also recording six aces and six assists.

“Emily’s scrappy,” Hurt said. “She’s not afraid to be on the floor, and is a good, solid, back-row player.”

At right-side hitter is senior Krista Rademeyer, who recorded 49 kills, four assists, 13 blocks and 58 digs last season.

“Krista’s a consistent player,” Hurt said. “She’s got good jumping capabilities and we’re expecting to see her improve on her hitting this season.”

Senior defensive specialist Katie Schuchardt saw limited action last season, but has proved to be one of the leaders of this year’s team, according to the Oakville High head coach.

“Katie’s the type of player that will do anything that you ask her to do,” Hurt said. “She’s a real vocal leader on the court for us.”
