The Lindbergh High School baseball team will need its “never-say-die” attitude this coming week if it wants any share of the Suburban West Conference regular-season championship.

The Flyers last week dropped a heartbreaking 6-5 decision at Northwest, putting Lindbergh in a tie with Lafayette for the conference championship.

“We went into the week controlling our own destiny,” Lindbergh head coach Darin Scott told the Call. “Now Northwest has the same loss record with two games remaining. The winner of the Lafayette game at least is guaranteed a share of the conference championship.”

Lindbergh (10-7, 5-2 Suburban West) was scheduled to play Lafayette May 2, but the game was postponed because of the weather. Northwest, on the other hand, will need wins over Parkway South and Kirk-wood to garner a tie with either Lindbergh or Lafayette.

Against Northwest on April 30, the Flyers took a 1-0 lead in the top of the fourth inning before giving up five runs in the bottom of the sixth inning. Lindbergh bounced back in the top of the seventh inning with a four-run outburst by Robby Meeh and Jon Meyer.

Meeh finished the afternoon with a two-hit performance that included two runs batted in. The senior first baseman is holding down a solid .314 batting average with 12 runs batted in.

“Robby came up with two, two-out RBI singles when we had our backs against the wall,” Scott said. “He really came through for us.”

Meyer also had a two-hit showing with two runs batted in and one run scored. The senior right fielder is also having a solid season with a .316 batting average and 10 runs batted in.

“Jon’s been a very solid player for us this season,” Scott said. “He’s one of those guys that comes to the park ready to play every day.”

The bottom of the seventh inning proved to be fatal for the Flyers when Northwest’s Ryan Weston ended the game with a walk-off home run.

Lindbergh starting pitcher Bryce Snelson took the loss as he gave up six runs on six hits in 52⁄3 innings. The junior hurler walked four batters and stuck out six in his second loss of the season. He’s currently 2-2 overall with a 3.96 earned-run average.

The Flyers were slated to play Tuesday — after the Call went to press — against the winner of the Fox-University City game in the first round of the Suburban South/West Tournament.
