Lindbergh High School hockey fans probably were disappointed when their Flyers lost three of the most important games of the regular season in a row, but they can take comfort knowing the club has regained its winning ways.

Lindbergh head coach Greg Anderson told the Call he knew what to expect going into the three-game stretch against Oakville, CBC and St. Louis University High, and was pleased with the effort and the level of play in two of the contests.

“Looking at our schedule, I knew that three-game stretch would be very important on where we stacked up,” he said.

Two of those games could have gone either way, Anderson noted, and he hopes to capitalize on the late-season test.

With only a few games remaining in the regular season, the Flyers are back to their winning ways as they knocked off Marquette 7-2 Friday night at the Hardee’s Ice Sports Complex in Chesterfield.

“Going into tonight’s game, it was back to the basics as I have preached since last Thursday, which was our first practice since that three-game stretch,” Anderson said. “I thought the boys competed well tonight, and it made us more focused as a group.

“Knowing the talent we have, who knows, this could be a little eye-opener because we had early success in the season and it’s kind of humbling for our guys to know that it’s not enough to start out hot. You need to be consistent throughout the year.”

Lindbergh’s Cody Guidorzi scored a pair of goals in the contest, snatching the game-winning goal.

Kyle Meeh also scored a pair for the Flyers, while Shawn Leslie, Jacob Henderson and Kurtis Mager each tallied a goal.

Anderson told the Call that it’s those basics that make the difference for a championship team.

“We need to have a good transition game, a good forecheck and drive the net hard,” he said. “It’s just the simple things of hockey and you have to have a good work ethic and the biggest challenge for any team is to do that on a consistent basis.

“Tonight, we got pucks to the net, we got traffic in front of the net … We capitalized seven times and we just need to continue to grow from that.”

Last season, the Flyers’ reached the second round of the playoffs, but fell to Oakville in a battle to the end, losing game one and tying the second game of a three-game series.

While Anderson said he likes to take care of the present instead of looking ahead, he is confident that come playoff time his squad will be ready, especially since all but three graduating seniors returned from the 2011-2012 team.

“I like the maturity we have going in there because the kids that we have are kind of older and they shouldn’t be surprised by anything thrown their way,” he said.
