The Oakville Senior High School varsity football team found a way to win its second game of the season 33-28 over the Lindbergh High School Flyers Friday night.

With the loss, the Flyers are now 1-2 on the season after having victory stolen from them in the last minutes of the game in front of a packed home crowd the last two contests.

The Tigers trailed 28-21 right after the start of the fourth quarter as Lindbergh opened the quarter, just like they did the game, with a touchdown with 11:19 remaining on the clock. Logan Offner was the scorer of that one, his second of the night.

Also scoring for the Flyers was Jay DuPree with a pair of touchdowns.

Flyers quarterback Chuck Houska completed 16 of 29 with an interception. On the night, he had 251 yards and three touchdowns.

But the Tigers answered with two touchdowns — one from Carvon Robinson and the other from Kyle Hearn — in the fourth to finally put them on top, and they held on for the win.

Also scoring for the Tigers was Qian Johnson, Kirby Phillips and Isaac Dozier.

Tigers quarterback Andy Oliver completed 19 of 38 for 230 yards and three touchdowns.

Oakville head coach Arlee Conners told the Call he saw plenty of positives in the game and was glad to come away with the victory.

“We found a way to win. So I’m definitely pretty happy with the outcome,” he said. “We ran the ball good. I think our quarterback did a good job of managing the game. “Offensively, I think we ran over a hundred plays in that ball game, so I think we kind of wore them down a little bit with all the plays we ran.”

The offensive line is a major contributor to the success that Oakville is having, especially against a quality defense like Lindbergh’s.

“I think those guys are steadily coming together as a group, and the scary thing I told them is we can still get a lot better,” Conners said about of the offensive line. “We are definitely happy with where were at so far, but we know we still have some work to do.”

Conners said that the defense needs to focus on looking forward, while the offense needs to continue doing what it’s doing.

“Defensively, we need to get better stopping. They’ve given up three touchdowns a game so far, and we just kind of got to buckle down again in that area,” he said. “Offensively, we need to continue to do what we are doing and do the things we are supposed to do and do them right every time we get a chance to.”

Both clubs will have to gear down for this Friday’s macchup.

Oakville will take on Eureka, which leads the Suburban West Conference with the same 2-1 record as the Tigers. The game will begin at 7 p.m. at Oakville.

Lindbergh will have to make some preparations to get ready for No. 8 ranked CBC (2-1) on the road.

The Mehlville Senior High School varsity football team fell 48-22 to Eureka last week and will face 2-1 Fox at 7 p.m. Friday at home.
