The Lindbergh High girls’ soccer team opened up the 2005 season with a bang, bombing University City 10-0 in the first round of the Suburban South/West Confer-ence tournament.

Flyer head coach Mark Giesing said it was one of the best offensive performances from a Lindbergh squad that he could recall.

“We really worked well as a team and I liked how we worked off the ball,” Giesing told the Call. “We haven’t put those kinds of numbers up against anybody because we’re usually a defensive-minded team.”

Aimee Ubriaco led Lindbergh in its win over University City, racking up three goals in her first start on the varsity squad. The freshman forward appears to have adjusted to the varsity game.

“Aimee had a great first varsity career game,” Giesing said. “She obviously is going to be very acclimated to the varsity game. She puts herself into position to make the shot and is very patient.”

The Flyers got a strong showing from an-other first-time varsity player. Freshman midfielder Casey Caldwell notched two goals in the Lindbergh opener against Uni-versity City.

“We have struggled to score from the wing midfielder positions and Casey is currently our right winger,” Giesing said. “I think we’re going to get a lot more goals from that position this season.”

At the left winger position is freshman Lauren Moran, who also contributed to the Flyers’ victory with a goal.

“What a gorgeous goal,” Giesing said. “She was at least 25 yards out and she let out a good rip.”

Senior forward Bridget Holmes, who led the Flyers last season with seven goals, also posted her first goal of the 2005 campaign.

“Bridget was working really hard off the ball all night long,” Giesing said. “I was really impressed with her work ethic on that goal.”

Juniors Allison Giles and Kelly Huelsing added upper-class support to the win, kicking one goal each. Giles equaled her goal-total from 2004 with one kick, and Huelsing kicked off her varsity career with a goal.

“The ball was out wide and Allison was able to read the situation,” Giesing said. “She made a nice hard shot from about 18 yards out.”

“Kelly’s really the communication leader on the team,” he added. “She keeps us settled, focused and always moving.”

Sophomore forward Ally Reynolds scored five goals and two assists for the Flyers in 2004 and has one already in 2005.

“Ally came off the bench and immediately kept the pace of the game going,” Gies-ing said. “It was a great goal where she buried a shot from the 18-yard mark.”

The Flyers face a tough Suburban West Conference home game at 5:30 p.m. today — Thursday, April 7 — against the Kirk-wood Pioneers.

“I think the Kirkwood game will be a good challenge for us,” Giesing said. “The key for us is going to be patience because they play very well and are very organized.”

But with freshmen playing great along with upper-class leadership, the Flyers have depth.

“Our biggest advantage is the depth of our bench,” Giesing said. “I feel very comfortable in our subbing and we don’t see a letdown in the pace of our game.”
