Former Democrat doesn’t understand supporting ‘defund the police’

Letters+to+the+editor

To the editor:

I volunteered on Democratic campaigns in 1987, 1991, 1993, 1997, 2001, 2005 and 2009, and I know those Democratic candidates would never have supported defunding the police. According to a recent ABC News poll, a stunning 55 percent of Democrats support defunding the police. Meanwhile, 89 percent of Republicans and 67 percent of independents oppose defunding the police.

There is no way I could support a party that doesn’t support law enforcement. People can absolutely be for prosecuting both bad police officers, as well as looters and rioters to the fullest extent of the law. A police officer once told me, “No one hates a bad cop more than a good cop because they put our lives in greater danger.”

I am stunned by the amazingly unfair guilt by association that officers are being subjected to and how few people seem to be standing up for them.

There are a small number of bad people in all professions, yet fairness and decency should stop us from vilifying an entire profession. Especially one like law enforcement, where men and women put their lives on the line everyday to protect ours.

Thank you for your service.
