The Lindbergh High School varsity tennis team is looking to fly higher in the girls’ rankings after coming in with a slightly under .500 record last season.

Flyers head coach Laura Conti believes her team has the experience and potential to have some success this season.

“I think my expectation is that we can definitely be a .500 or above team and that we can get a couple girls through to sectionals,” Conti said. “I think that our girls put in some work in the off-season.

“So some of them are coming in improved over last year. Ultimately, the kind of team that we have is one where they are looking to improve their game and as long as they all are then we are good.”

Conti is looking for her returning team, which only graduated two seniors last year, to step up its game.

“We have a couple of girls that are going to have to step up in new positions again,” she said.

Starters coming back this season are Marie Schaefer, Michelle Hoxsey, Kaily Forthaus and Katelyn Freund. Schaefer went to the sectionals last year and will come back as the No. 1 singles player.

“I am going to expect a lot out of these girls,” Conti said.

The Flyers’ work ethic and experience will be instrumental in the team’s overall performance throughout the 2011 season.

“The strength is that we do have a good number of them that do participate in clinics and stuff in the off-season, and I think also that they are a positive group of girls that are interested in coming out and playing their best every single day,” Conti said. “And so that’s all that you can ask for from student athletes is that they give their best on any given day.

“Our weakness is I think that we don’t have any year-round competitive tennis players and therefore when we are playing against the better teams then we are going to struggle against those teams because those girls have the tournament readiness.”
