First-ever Flyer Classic Saturday at Lindbergh

High school wrestling season is under way, and the Lindbergh Flyers already have had a dual meet, participated in a tournament and are about to serve as host of the inaugural Flyer Classic this weekend at Lindbergh High School, 4900 S. Lindbergh Blvd.

Things got started a little over a week ago when the Flyers slipped past Lafayette in their first dual of the season, 35-33. Then last weekend Lindbergh was one of a dozen teams to compete at Parkway South, where the Flyers finished fourth in the tournament — a spot that Coach Tom Gose pretty much expected.

“In the first tournament of the year you don’t really know what teams have,” he said. “We expected to be third or fourth, and that’s where we were. We have some guys not in the lineup just yet and our football players have had limited practice, so it was a mix of good and bad for us. It was a tough tournament.”

For Lindbergh, four athletes brought home medals from Parkway South including Jeff Streibig (130 pounds, first place), Joe Catalano (125 pounds, second place), Kevin Duniven (140 pounds, third place), and Dan Virtue (145 pounds, third place).

With their first tournament behind them, Gose and the Flyers now turn their attention to their own tournament that takes place this Saturday, Dec. 13 — the first-ever Flyer Classic.

Starting at 9 a.m. Saturday, Lindbergh will serve as host of the eight-team tournament that Gose said he believes will be over by late afternoon.

“It ought to be interesting,” Gose told the Call. “It’s more work than just showing up at someone else’s gym, but some of those tournaments out there can become marathons. We hope that this will be a quick day and a nice change of pace.”

The tournament will be divided into two brackets — the gold pool and the green pool. Joining the host Flyers in the gold pool will be Francis Howell Central, DeSmet and Springfield Glendale, while the green pool will house Eureka, Zumwalt North, Parkway West and Hazelwood West.
