While there will not be an election in April for any aldermen in the City of Crestwood, residents will vote on whether or not to have a local sales tax on recreational marijuana.
On Nov. 3, Missouri voters approved a constitutional amendment, Amendment 3, legalizing recreational marijuana in the state. The amendment permits local governments to charge up to a 3-percent local sales tax on recreational marijuana. It is not possible to charge a higher local sales tax.
On Nov. 22, the Crestwood Board of Aldermen unanimously voted to call for an election April 4, 2023, to ask voters whether or not to authorize a 3-percent local sales tax on recreational marijuana sales in the city. The vote was part of the board’s consent agenda, so there was no discussion by aldermen. In Missouri, new taxes must be approved by voters.
The 3-percent sales tax on recreational sales would be in addition to a 6-percent statewide sales tax.
Editor’s note: This article has been updated to clarify that there will not be an election for any aldermen in April 2023, however there will be an election for mayor.
