To the editor:
This is a response to the editorial “Aldermen in Sunset Hills oppose potential merger” by Mike Anthony in the Sept. 21 edition of the Call.
The editorial ends with “Residents in Sunset Hills and Green Park, through their elected representatives, currently can determine their destinies through local control. Who in their right mind would want to change that?”
Being of sound mind and body, I accept your challenge and say I would like to change that. And I would like to publicly state that I do support a city-county merger because I want my tax dollars to go to improve the whole St. Louis region, not just my own local municipality.
I understand my decision would not benefit me and my superior quality of life would go down.
And I really don’t care. I really don’t.
What’s more important to me is that my taxes help those in the St. Louis region who need it the most regarding improved education, housing, jobs, utilities, family services, et cetera.
We are only as strong as our weakest link.
We must help those less fortunate in St. Louis city by merging St. Louis County with them. We must give them some hope that we are all in this together.
We will be a stronger region as a whole through this decision.
