The Crestwood Board of Aldermen unanimously voted to approve a special delivery permit for the new Dierbergs to accept the deliveries between hours of 7 a.m. and 7 p.m. on Sundays,
Per city code, the loading and unloading of trucks can only occur between 7 a.m. and 7 p.m. on weekdays and Saturday and not at all on Sunday. The request from Dierbergs would allow 7 a.m. to 9 p.m. Monday through Saturday and 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. on Sunday.
The request was originally part of the consent agenda but was pulled by Ward 4 Alderman Tony Kennedy, who was concerned about the impact weekend deliveries could have on the surrounding residential area, such as noise from idling trucks. Dierbergs is building a new store at the former Crestwood mall property.
According to City Clerk Helen Ingold, there is an ordinance against trucks idling and the request from Dierbergs would not override that idling ordinance.
Dierbergs Director of Real Estate Brent Beumer said there is a need for deliveries on Sundays because Saturday and Sunday are the grocery store’s biggest shopping days so it goes through a lot of product.
“Trying to get it down much more than that just becomes a challenge from a logistical standpoint,” Beumer said.
The ordinance does give aldermen the authority to modify it in case of complaints from residents.
