The Oakville American Legion junior varsity team is riding a three-game winning streak after defeating Florissant 11-6 Sunday afternoon.

“We just hit up and down the lineup,” Oakville head coach Adam Boyer Jr. told the Call. “We had several opportunities where we had runners in scoring position and drove them in.”

Oakville (7-7, 5-3 District 10) was led by the solid pitching performance of Jake Frahm, who gave up five runs on six hits in 51/3 innings pitched. Frahm also walked three and struck out three in his first win of the season.

“They (Florissant) got two on him in the first inning and he kept his head,” Boyer told the Call. “He got some key outs for us and basically just kept us in the game.”

Frahm was relieved in the sixth inning by Mike Treiber, who gave up one run on two hits in 12/3 innings thrown. Treiber also walked one and struck out two in his first appearance on the mound this season.

“Mike came into the game with the bases loaded and one out,” Boyer said. “He was able to get us out of there with just one run. He stepped it up at a big time for us.”

Oakville center fielder Kevin Mahler had one of the strongest days at the plate with a 2-4 performance in which he drove in four runs.

“Kevin started with a triple and is just a sound hitter,” Boyer said. “He goes up there and gives you three solid hacks at the plate. He’s a tough out for any pitcher.”

Another Oakville player that had a solid day at the plate was designated hitter Mike Russo, who went 2-3 with one sacrifice and three runs batted in.

“Mike’s another guy that goes up to the plate with a job to do,” Boyer said. “He’s another guy that for any pitcher is going to be a tough out.”

Oakville is back in action today — June 16 — as it takes on Manchester Post 208 at Washington University. Manchester and Kirkwood are tied at the top of the District 10 South rankings with 5-1 records in district play.

Boyer knows that his players are going to have their work cut out for them.

“Manchester’s one of the top teams in the league,” Boyer said. “We’re going to have to come out with our A game because it’s going to be an uphill battle throughout the game.”

Oakville’s game with Manchester is scheduled for a 5:30 p.m. start.
