Ailing Gaterman sworn in during special meeting

Fire Chief Ray Haddock Saturday administered the oath of office to Joseph Gaterman for his second term of office on the Mehlville Fire Protection District Board of Directors during a special meeting called at Gaterman’s home.

“Please don’t take pictures,” said Board Chairman Tom O’Driscoll asked the Call before the meeting. “I don’t know how bad it is, but they’re asking that you not take pictures.”

Gaterman was the top vote getter April 8 in a three way race for a seat being vacated by Jim Abkemeier, Jr. who did not file for election for a second six-year term.

Haddock said votes were certified by the St. Louis County Board of Elections on Apr. 15.

“I was surprised,” Gaterman said of his election. “I think I can do the job in a round-about way.”

Gaterman served as fire chief from January 1992 until June 1998. He served on the Board from the summer of 1998 until April 1999.

The board voted to retain O’Driscoll as chairman, Ottoline as treasurer and named Gaterman secretary in the only other business conducted at the meeting.

Haddock said the special meeting was called because Gaterman would be unable to attend the Board’s April 21 and April 28 meetings.
