After passage by the Sunset Hills Board of Aldermen last summer, a WWII veterans memorial has officially been erected at First Community Credit Union, 3887 S. Lindbergh Blvd.
A dedication for the monument was held on June 8, attended by the community and service members alike.
The project, co-sponsored with the Olga Despotis Perpetuities Trust, includes an 18,000-pound, 4-foot-by-4-foot-by-9-foot tall black granite obelisk with room for approximately 120 names on each of its three sides, along with the emblems of six different branches of the armed forces – the Marine Corps, the Navy, the Army, the Air Corps, the Merchant Marines and the Coast Guard.
“It’s good that we remember our history, because if we don’t remember our history and the sacrifices of those before us, we might not value our freedoms as much as we should,” Lt. Col. Ralph DePalma said.
