World War II POW to share experiences June 15

The Friends of Jefferson Barracks welcome World War II prisoner of war Jack Sorkin to share his experiences at 7 p.m. Wednesday, June 15, at the Jefferson Bar-racks Park Visitors’ Center.

Sorkin flew eight missions, including two over Berlin, before being shot down, according to a news release. Upon being captured, he was taken for interrogation near Frankfurt and transported to Stalag Luft 111 at Sagan, northwest of Breslau.

On Jan. 27, 1945, he was marched out of camp in a snowstorm to avoid the advancing Russians. He and his fellow POWs were taken by box car to a new camp, Stalag VIIA at Moosburg in Bavaria, until being liberated by the Third Army April 29.

To obtain advance registration for this free presentation, call the Friends of Jef-ferson Barracks at (314) 544-5714.
