Mehlville School District’s Wohlwend Elementary reading interventionist Ellen Geders meets in person with a student through a Plexiglas barrier, with masks. All students in K-12 schools have to wear masks under a new county order.

A water main break at Wohlwend Elementary in Oakville is the Mehlville School District’s first chance to test out its new policy of hosting virtual school days when school is let out for bad weather or emergencies.

The water main broke over the weekend and will be fixed Tuesday, Nov. 17, Principal Dave Meschke said in a letter sent to parents Monday. That will require closing the school since the water to the school will have to be shut off during the repair. That would limit hand washing, a necessity during the COVID-19 pandemic, so the building will be closed for the day.

School will not be canceled, however, and will be meeting virtually starting at 8:45 a.m. Classes will resume as normal Wednesday, Nov. 18. The closure does not affect Oakville Middle School, which is directly next to Wohlwend. The schools are currently attending in-person classes with the hybrid/blended model.

It’s one of the first tests of the district’s new policy, spurred by the widespread adoption of virtual schooling this year due to COVID-19, that there will no longer be traditional snow days or other emergency days off school. Instead, students will be able to attend class virtually.

Dear Wohlwend Families,

Over the weekend the water main to our building ruptured.  Repairs are slated to occur tomorrow, Tuesday, November 17, 2020.  In order to fix the pipe, the water to Wohlwend must be turned off for several hours. Without water, hand washing and sanitizing opportunities are limited. Due to this, Wohlwend Elementary will be closed on Tuesday, November 17, 2020.  Students will instead have virtual classes with their teachers.  Classes will resume as normally scheduled on Wednesday, November 18, 2020.

Classes will begin online at 8:45 AM on Tuesday, November 17, 2020.  Your child’s teacher will email further instructions this evening.

Oakville Middle School will be open for class tomorrow.  The water main problem only affects Wohlwend Elementary.
