For anyone walking through Rogers Middle School, the building may look like a stranger. Thanks to the funds generated by Proposition 1 — a zero-tax-rate-increase bond that was passed on the April ballot by 79.2% — sizable renovations are taking place at Affton School District’s middle school.
The library has a new layout, complete with large windows and an option for outdoor classroom space. The restrooms are receiving a revamp, too, with Affton purple tile walls, and the locker room is being refitted as a “flex space” and a weight room.
Out back, there will be a brand new shed for the Garden Club, and across the building, new solar powers are being utilized.
When Prop 1 was approved, the renovations were planned to occur in scheduled phases, with most construction being done during the summers over the course of several years. The proposition was intended to modernize the district’s facilities, and it will use $30 million in funds across the district.
In addition to Rogers Middle School, Affton High School, Gotsch Intermediate School and Mesnier Primary School will also be updated.
Notable changes to AHS will include an accessible ramp in the front entry, an ADA-accessible elevator near the courtyard and auditorium, a “more prominent entry with elevator” near the gym and pool and various kitchen upgrades. The school library and its connected classrooms will also get a modernizing makeover.
A similar library remodel will be seen at Gotsch, along with ADA-compliant toilet renovations throughout the facility.
Mesnier will receive new paint finishes in the gym and along the exterior. The school’s outdoor green spaces might also see a refresh in the removal of old fencing and asphalt, with new walking paths, a new rain garden and an outdoor classroom space to be added in its place.
