Third annual Senior Prom set Saturday

The third annual Senior Prom at St. Louis Community College’s Meramec campus will take place from 6 to 11 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 11, in the Student Center, 11333 Big Bend Blvd.

This year’s theme is “Meet Me in St. Louis,” a tribute to the 1904 World’s Fair held in Forest Park, and will feature live music, a dance leader, light refreshments and the coronation of a prom king and queen. The event for seniors 55 and older, co-sponsored by the Meramec Alumni Association and the Club Coordination Council, is free, but reservations are required due to limited space. To make reservations, call (314) 984-7167.

“The response has been overwhelming,” Linda McGinnis, alumni coordinator, stated in a news release. “After last year’s prom, we received so many nice notes from the attendees, saying how much they enjoyed themselves. This year, we started getting calls in August for the 2006 prom. It’s really a thrill for everyone involved.”

The Meramec Alumni Association has made community outreach a major goal for its yearly activities.

“The prom is a great way to get students involved in the practice of giving back,” McGinnis stated. “The interaction between students and senior members of the community is heartwarming.”

In addition, the association uses proceeds from its fund-raising events to award $8,000 to $10,000 in scholarships to current SLCC students each year.

“This money can make a big difference to students who may need some help paying for classes or buying books,” McGinnis explained.
