Dive into history | Do you have a favorite set of dishes you chose for yourself? Dishes, or china, can reflect our style and personality, particularly the ones we use for special occasions. Presidents and their First Ladies often have new sets of china produced for their official entertaining, such as State Dinners. Julie Northrip, former interpretive program manager at the Ulysses S. Grant National Historic Site, will show and discuss some of the china used during presidential administrations in the 18th and 19th centuries. Each pattern was carefully chosen to create the desired atmosphere during official dining. The program is free, but reservations are required and can be made by calling 314-842-1867 extension 230. This event will take place from 11 a.m. – noon and 1 – 2 p.m. at the Ulysses S. Grant National Historic Site, 7400 Grant Road.

STEM and skate | The Kennedy Recreation Complex, 6050 Wells Road, is offering a STEM field trip opportunity from 9:30 a.m. – noon. Kids ages second through fifth grade can try the “Friction Pucks” activity, then enjoy 75 minutes of open skate fun. The activity costs $10 per child; if you’d like to skate but aren’t participating in the activity, regular admission prices are required ($6 per child for children ages 4 – 12). Dive into history | Nick Sacco, Historian and Curator at Ulysses S. Grant National Historic Site, will discuss how the Camp Jackson Affair brought the Civil War to St. Louis. This presentation examines Missouri’s secession debates, military efforts to control the city and how Camp Jackson is remembered. Explore some of the disasters and key moments that shaped the St. Louis region throughout history. This webinar series is co-hosted by the St. Louis Challenging History Collaborative.
