Planning panel recommends denial of liquor store

The St. Louis County Planning Commission unanimously recommended denial of a proposed Affton liquor store April 26.

The proposal is for 9296 Gravois Road and called for a liquor license, interior changes, a new trash enclosure and parking lot improvements. The proposal is directly across the street from another liquor store.

The plan was met with fierce opposition by citizens at a public hearing March 29. State Rep. Michael Burton, D-Lakeshire, whose House district covers Affton, was in attendance and said if the store were approved it would “set Affton back.”

County staff found that the proposal failed to meet requirements for a conditional use permit. The committee report stated the proposed use is incompatible with surrounding land use developments and the minimal site improvements do not improve the community in any way.
