One of the OHS girls tennis team’s biggest strengths this year is the team’s consistency in singles. Photo courtesy of the Mehlville School District.

As the girls tennis season begins, the Oakville Tigers are hoping that five returning players to the varsity squad will spell success for 2023.

“We’re looking really good,” Oakville head coach Connor Cassity said. “I think that our biggest strength is how deep we’ll be this year. I also think that our consistency at the four, five and six singles will be a strength for us this season.”

All eyes will be focused on junior Michelle Gruden as she returns to the No. 1 singles slot this season.

“Michelle plays a really good, well-rounded game,” Cassity said. “She’s very strong mentally, holds her composure and plays smart … which is fun to see.”

Senior Nia Nusinovic will play her third season at No. 2 singles.

“Nia is a powerful player who plays very aggressive,” Cassity said. “She’s the type of player that makes big shots to end points quickly.”

At No. 3 singles this season is junior Olivia Bresler, who’s already making improvements according to the Tigers’ head coach.

“Olivia’s game is even more consistent this year and has a big forehand,” Cassity said. “She’s been fun to watch as the season has progressed.”

One player to keep an eye on in 2023 is junior Samantha Smith at the No. 4 singles position. According to Cassity, she’s “a coach’s favorite success story.”

“Samantha got bumped up to varsity last year and it’s been fun watching her grow every season,” Cassity said. “She’s the perfect example of how important it is to play tennis in the offseason.”

Rounding out the Tiger’s five returners is senior Morgan Kienzler.

“Morgan has been a solid varsity player all four years,” Cassity said. “She fights for every match and is just a big asset for the team.”
