Oakville Republicans endorse Prop 1, Prop 2

The Oakville Township Republican Club has voted unanimously to endorse the Mehlville Fire Protection District’s April 7 ballot measures Proposition 1 and Proposition 2, both of which would permanently reduce the district’s tax-rate ceiling.

Prop 1 asks whether the district’s general-fund tax-rate ceiling should be permanently reduced by 36 cents per $100 of assessed valuation while Prop 2 asks whether the district’s pension-fund tax-rate ceiling would be permanently reduced by 4 cents per $100.

A release from the Oakville Township Republicans states the club unanimously approved a motion that read:

“Be it resolved that the Oakville Township Republican Club feels that sound fiscal management of taxpayer monies has been demonstrated by the Mehlville fire board over the most recent years, and that their proposal to reduce the tax-levy ceiling by a total of 40 cents is a positive step in limiting the size of local government spending, therefore we heartily endorse Mehlville fire district Prop 1 and Prop 2 on the April ballot and urge all like-minded taxpayers in the Oakville area to vote ‘yes’ on these two proposals.”

Board Chairman Kurt Witzel stated in the release, “When you look at the out of control spending happening right now in Washington, D.C., by the White House and Congress, it is refreshing to see our local officials on the Mehlville fire board wanting to reduce the potential taxes on the people here in the south county area. These folks are to be commended.”

Oakville Township Republican Club President Bob Haul stated in the release, “You gotta applaud the work of the Mehlville fire board in bringing fiscal responsibility back to the fire district.

“When they can continue to upgrade our department personnel through additional training, add equipment and build a new firehouse in Oakville, all while reducing the tax burden on the taxpayers, it shows they are working hard to best serve our community.”
