Oakville Middle School eighth grader Trevor Leach will join a select group of students from across the country this summer when he attends the U.S. Naval Academy’s Summer STEM Program, an overnight academic camp designed for high school students who are interested in science, technology, engineering and math.

Only 375 students from across the U.S. were selected for this year’s program, according to a school district news release.

“I applied because my dad went there and I thought it would be something fun to do,” stated Leach, who is the son of Ken and Diana Leach. “I’m looking forward to all of the stuff you get to do there, like robotics and chemistry.”

The STEM Program gives students the opportunity to experience real-life applications of math and science principles through hands-on practical learning. Students will learn from distinguished Naval Academy professors in world-class lab facilities that provide a unique learning environment outside the traditional classroom.

Trevor was selected for the STEM program based on his academic proficiency, community involvement and leadership characteristics, the release stated.
