Oakville High students earn journalism awards

Seven Oakville Senior High School students received awards in the write-off contests at the National High School Journalism Convention, which recently took place in Boston.

More than 2,000 students participated in the write-off contests at the journalism convention, and 859 received honors, according to a Mehlville School District news release.

Maddy Elking, Broadcast News Writing, and Joe Keller, Broadcast Commentary, both received Superior ratings, which is the highest students can receive, the release stated.

Receiving honorable mention in their respective categories were: Maddie Foster, Newspaper Feature Writing; Taylor Paluczak,Yearbook Copy/Captions: Sports; Alexa Shelton, Yearbook Copy/Captions: Academics); Mariah Blassi, Yearbook Copy/Captions: Clubs; and Sarah Koenen, Yearbook Copy/Captions: Student Life.

For the second year in a row, Oakville’s “Eyes on the Tigers: Channel 97 News” was chosen for a Broadcast Pacemaker Finalist award.

Oakville was one of just eight schools in the country to receive this recognition, according to the release.
